Antique 1930s Chinese Advertising Poster Three Kingdoms Guan Yu Ruby Queen Cigar:
$400.00

Up for sale is a beautiful and exceptionally rare vintage Chinese Republic Era advertising calendar poster from the 1920s–1930s. This poster was distributed by the Yee Tsoong Tobacco Company (英商啟東煙草股份有限公司), a major corporate arm of the British-American Tobacco Co. (BAT) operating in Shanghai and mainland China. [1]Unlike common advertising posters of the era that focused strictly on fashion models, this premium poster showcases a classical narrative masterpiece by Hu Boxiang (胡伯翔), one of the most celebrated and highly paid calendar lithograph artists of early 20th-century China. The detailed scene vividly depicts the dramatic climax from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Guan Yunchang (Guan Yu) honorably releasing the defeated Cao Cao at Hualong Trail after the Battle of Red Cliffs. Guan Yu is shown prominently on his warhorse holding his legendary Green Dragon Crescent Blade, while Cao Cao bows on a white steed.
This piece comes complete with its original metallic top and bottom binding hanging bars. It is a spectacular artifact bridging Chinese literature, early global corporate trade, and East Asian graphic arts. Related Items:
